Courses for Healthcare Professionals and People with Type 1 Diabetes

Managing Type 1 Diabetes with a Ketogenic Diet. Essential and Advanced Courses.

Thank you for visiting this page and showing an interest in ketogenic lifestyles in Type 1 diabetes. The aim of this website and courses is to ensure that all people with Type 1 diabetes have information on ketogenic lifestyles and that they have high-quality clinical support for their choice of a ketogenic diet.

Who are these courses intended for?

The Keto Courses are designed for clinicians managing Type 1 Diabetes, including diabetologists, specialist nurses, primary care staff of all clinical grades, and therapists working with people with Type 1 diabetes. They will also appeal to those with Type 1 diabetes themselves who are experts and need detailed information on managing their condition with a ketogenic diet.

Meeting the needs of clinicians

The courses are based on over three decades of experience working on the front line of a public health service. A UK NHS doctor has designed this course, Dr Ian Lake, who is a GP and himself has Type 1 diabetes. He has experience from both sides of the consultation desk as a patient and a clinician and with both high-carbohydrate and ketogenic diets. There is a recognition that some clinicians will have a need only to grasp the basic information, but others will want to delve deeper if time or interest allows. With constraints on time and resources, it is a constant challenge to keep abreast of significant changes in clinical practice. It is even more of a challenge to implement changes in ideas and practice. A ketogenic lifestyle for many clinicians will require a paradigm shift in thinking. For patients, even more so. Many are not trained in critical thinking and self-reliance but will have access to the free information about ketogenic diets on this website. People with Type 1 will be looking for expert guidance from their clinician that will support their choice of a ketogenic lifestyle. The learning objectives in these professional courses provide appropriate and essential information that clinicians can put into practice safely and build up confidence through practice. There is an option of mentoring if required. The aim is for consultations in Type 1 diabetes to be a collaboration between clinician and their patient with expert support for a ketogenic lifestyle if the patient chooses it.
