Shifting Gears: Day Sixteen, Seventeen and Eighteen

IMG_3533

Waking up to a pleasant view of he western Alps and a pleasant day in prospect.

IMG_3574

Bacon and scrambled egg one morning. And if there wasn’t enough fat, some butter.

Another day, another breakfast. Emmental naturally. Local cheese.

Bavaria’s only lighthouse. Desperate marketing but a nice and impressive structure. It indicates how much trade there must have been in past times.

Relaxing, tourist, Lindau harbourside.

IMG_3502

Time to kick back and chill.

The ‘office’ balcony for three days, to reflect and contemplate.

Spargel (asparagus) in season and a treat for lunch.

Heart rate zones were typical of training cyclists. I used this to compare my performance with Team Novo Nordisk. I didn’t win on athletic performance but did win on diabetes performance.

Macronutrient analysis. Ketogenic throughout and still here!  Protein worked out at 2grams per kg of ideal body weight. Note the calorie deficit of 1880 calories over most of the trip. A mere 250g of fat, of which I have plenty on board to fuel this. Click to enlarge.

Glucose analysis of the trip. Average 6.2mmol/l (111mg/dL). And with 89% time in range, that is pretty good for daily long distance exercise.

IMG_3632

Time in range is good considering the challenges of the trip. Physically tough, with pens. It shows what is possible with ‘old’ technology. It’s not the tech but the way you work with it. Almost none of the lows outside 3.9 were hypos.

Easy glucose management on rest days. Day 16, day 1 resting. Basal adjusted to suit the conditions.

Easy glucose management on rest days. Day 17, day 2 resting.

Comparison of sensors. Continuous ketones reading slightly lower consistently than keto-mojo.

Farewell panniers, tent and coffer maker. See you at home. Bon voyage.

IMG_3503

An airship on trials flying along the coast from Friedrichshafen. They were out every day.

IMG_3561

A view south to the snowcapped Alps on the horizon. I would be riding in them in just two days time.

IMG_3545

On a run past a mirror wall. To vain to ignore!

IMG_3538

Jellied and sharp tasting meat terrine. The fewer questions the better. Pleasant enough and local.

Last night of rest and an orange sky drama.
