Projects and Contributions

Exploring the intersection of diabetes management and endurance sports, I participated in the Zero Five 100 project, a groundbreaking 100-mile run investigating the ketogenic diet’s impact on Type 1 diabetes. Additionally, I contributed to ‘Diabetes Unpacked,’ a book supporting Prof. Tim Noakes’s legal fund, advocating for low-carbohydrate diets in diabetes management. Dr. David Cavan, a renowned Diabetologist, featured my insights on low-carb strategies for Type 1 diabetes in his book ‘Take Control of Type 1 Diabetes,’ underscoring the importance of dietary interventions in diabetes care.

Zero Five 100 Project:

The Zero Five 100 project involved a water-only 100-mile run with a group of eight individuals, including one person with Type 1 diabetes. It aimed to address concerns about the ketogenic diet’s impact on Type 1 diabetes. The project has significantly contributed to the understanding of Type 1 diabetes in sports and management. You can access the published paper here.

Diabetes Unpacked:

I had the privilege to contribute to a book supporting Prof. Tim Noakes’s legal fund. Prof. Noakes, an internationally respected scientist and ultramarathon runner, authored much of the science on carb-loading for sports. However, after developing type 2 diabetes himself, he realized the importance of diet and shifted his perspective on carbohydrate consumption. Despite facing a complaint from a dietitian and undergoing a 3-year trial, Prof. Noakes was vindicated and the profits from the book supported the Tim Noakes Charitable Foundation. The book offers valuable insights into low-carbohydrate diets for health, with Chapter 5 focusing on Type 1 diabetes. You can learn more about the book at Diabetes Unpacked.

Take Control of Type 1 Diabetes:

David Cavan, an internationally respected Diabetologist with a distinguished career in the NHS, featured my insights on low-carb strategies for Type 1 diabetes in his book. You can find the book ‘Take Control of Type 1 Diabetes’ on Amazon.
